The
Further Education Professional Development
Forum: Appointment of New Chairman
The
Department has appointed to the Chair
of the Further Education Professional
Development
Forum Dr Ray Land, MA, MSc, PhD, PGCE,
FRSA [Fellow of the Royal Society
of Arts], FSEDA [Fellow of the Staff
and Educational Development Association],
ILTM [Member of the Institute for
Learning and Teaching in Higher Education].
Dr
Land is currently Director of the
Centre for Teaching, Learning and
Assessment in the Department of Higher
and Community Education at Edinburgh
University. He has been engaged in
teaching since 1974 and has worked
in secondary, further, adult and higher
education; his experience includes
12 years as an FE lecturer in the
London region. Since 1985 he has been
formally involved in running programmes
of professional development for teachers
in further and higher education, at
Greenwich University, Napier University
and, from 1997, Edinburgh University.
Dr Land's current research interests
include the management of educational
development and organisational change
and theoretical aspects of learning
technology, and he has published extensively
in these and many other fields.
In
June Dr Land will be taking up post
as Professor of Higher Education Development
in the Centre of Higher Education
Development at the University of Coventry.
He will continue to live in Scotland
and maintain links with the Scottish
education system.
Dr
Land has agreed also to chair the
Steering Group which will work with
the Department to take forward the
review of occupational standards and
national guidelines on provision leading
to the teaching qualification in further
education and related professional
development, published earlier this
year. The Steering Group will consist
of representatives, yet to be appointed,
of key organisations in the field
of FE and the professional development
of FE lecturers.
Dr
Land succeeds as Chair Professor Iain
Macdonald, formerly Senior Vice-Principal
of Aberdeen University, and more recently,
as Interim Chair, Mr Iain Ovens, Principal
of Dundee College. We are grateful
to all three for bringing their skills
and experience to bear in the interest
of FE lecturers' professionalism.
